Mistral Sail Setup and Care

Setting up a Mistral One-Design Sail for racing

For this job you will need the following:

TOOLS
CONSUMABLES

1x Hacksaw
1x Tape measure
1x Ruler
1x Flat screwdriver
1x Shifting spanner
1x Pen
1x Pin / needle
1x T-shirt
1x file

1x large black Permanent Pen
2x 2/8th bolt & nut
2x Harken 206 Pullies
1x Teflon cutting board piece 15mm round
2x White Sticky Vinyl 1.2m x 35cm

The first thing you must do before you take your new sail to the water is to attach the clear monofilm protective layer. This monofilm is supplied by the manufacturer and comes in the sail bag with your new sail. You should have received two pieces of film, one for each side of the sail to protect the sail where it comes in contact with the harness lines and the boom cleats which are apart of the outhaul system.

Step one - Rigging the sail

You must first rig the sail in a clean environment (grass is acceptable). Put your boom at he height that you normally Sail with. Look at where the boom sits along the sail and place tour 1st sheet of film over the area and mark the sail where the corners of the film are on the sail. When doing this you must have the film coming right to the end of the monofilm where it reaches the clew reinforcement. ( See picture below ). This will give you an idea of where you must but the film when you go to you must.

Step two - Trimming the Monofilm

At the rear of the film you will see that it covers over the reinforcing and this access must be trimmed away. Trim of this area and slightly round off the corners of the film. We trim the access as the monofim is designed to stick to the clear part of the sail only not to the reinforcing areas. Rounding the corners helps in stopping the film from lifting at at later date. take your first piece of film and place it against the second with both backings together and trim the second piece to be the same as the first.

Step three - Applying the film.

You must seperate the the rear first cm of film from the backing and cut this backing off. Lay your film flat on the sail and place it in the exact position that you want it to sit. Carefully place the down the 1st corner and work the film down onto the sail toward the other corner

.

Now you should fold the the rest of the film back so that it covers you hand. Put your T-shirt on your hand ( one layer thick to help you hand from not sticking to the film as you apply it. You should apply the film by moving you hand from side to side slightly pushing more film to the sail with each stroke. Use light downward force, which will protect against air bubbles in the film. You will get some air under the film from time to time. aIf this occures you should use your pin to pric these holes only when you have completed the side you are working on.

When you have finnished that side turn the sail over and work on the otherside, making sure that you have placed the film directly opposite to the first application of film.
